Attendees:
- Nora Pearson
- Patty Burns
- Adam Devlin
- Ryder Anderson
37.1 Key Discussion Points
37.1.1 1. Survey 1-2-3 Data Export Process
37.1.1.1 Current Status
- Nora has completed entry of 15 pedons into Survey123
- Team working on process to export data to Excel format for QC before NASIS upload
- Identified some technical challenges:
- Coordinates displaying incorrectly (some lat/long values reversed)
- Points currently showing at 0,0 coordinates in web interface
- Crashing issues when trying to input coordinates through map interface
37.1.1.2 Action Items
- Nora to resubmit surveys with corrected lat/long coordinates
- Export all 15 pedons to Excel format
- Place exported files in shared Box folder
- Team to test QC process using Excel format
37.1.2 2. Documentation and Communication Process
37.1.2.1 Team Decisions
- Will maintain single running document in Box for questions/comments
- All team members can edit document online simultaneously
- Document will track:
- Questions during data entry
- QC feedback
- Technical issues
- Classification decisions
37.1.2.2 Process Updates
- Patty will provide MLRA shapefile for reference
- Team has access to site photos through Survey123 map interface
- Will continue using Box for file sharing and collaboration
37.1.3 3. GIS and Mapping Progress
37.1.3.1 Current Work (Patty)
- Analyzing geomorphic surfaces using multiple data sources:
- USGS county data
- Minnesota DNR land type associations
- Howard Hobbs surficial geology maps
- Waiting for current Minnesota Geological Survey layer
- Working on identifying major land surfaces with different parent materials
37.1.3.2 Future Plans
- Joe proposing machine learning approach to identify sampling locations
- Will incorporate:
- Geomorphic surfaces
- Land use data
- Various covariates
- Plan to identify underutilized areas for future sampling
37.1.4 4. Land Use Classification Discussion
37.1.4.1 Current Considerations
- Multiple potential classification schemes:
- Met Council data
- EPA impervious surface data
- Land cover classifications
- Ryder shared experience from previous urban soil survey:
- Used EPA layer with 1-meter resolution
- Combined land use and impervious surface data
- Helped define urban land map units vs. residential areas
37.1.4.2 Next Steps
- Adam to potentially lead land use classification effort
- Team to investigate availability of EPA layer for Minnesota
- Plan meeting with Joe to discuss classification approach
37.2 Action Items
37.2.1 For Nora
- Fix and resubmit surveys with reversed coordinates
- Export 15 pedons to Excel format
- Upload Excel files to Box
- Continue entering next batch of pedons
- Research spring semester meeting schedule options
37.2.2 For Patty
- Share MLRA shapefile in Box
- Continue geomorphic surface analysis
- Coordinate with Joe regarding machine learning approach
- Review exported pedon data when available
37.2.3 For Ryder
- Investigate EPA layer availability for Minnesota
- Share experience with urban soil classification
- Assist with QC process development
37.2.4 For Adam

- Continue using Survey 1-2-3 for initial data entry
- Export to Excel for QC review
- Final upload to NASIS after QC complete
- Maintain running documentation of decisions and questions
37.5.2 Mapping Framework
- Focus on geomorphic surfaces first
- Incorporate land use classification later
- Wait for Joe’s input on machine learning approach
- Consider multiple classification schemes
37.5.3 Documentation
- Use single running document in Box
